There are a variety of outdoor recreational activities available on and around the Machen Retreat and Conference Center.

Outdoor Exploration

There is plenty of opportunity to explore God’s creation.

River Swimming

Approximately 3 miles from the Main building is a swimming hole on the Bull Pasture river.  Due to a large shallow area which feeds the swimming hole, the water is not as cold as some of the spring fed creeks.

There are two large caves which individuals may explore at their own risk.  One is called the water cave, as the entrance is almost completely filled by the water coming out.  Once inside it is a fun cave to explore.  The other cave is called the mountain cave, as you have to go up the side of the mountain to get to it.

There is a hard packed court for playing basketball.  It is regulation size and allows for plenty of exercise.

The volleyball net is movable, as the grass is not able to stand too many games.

Close to the main building is a large flat field with is use to play baseball.  So far no one has been able to hit a ball all the way back to the main building from home plate.

Tire Town

For the younger children, there is a area which has large tires to sit on, jump on, and crawl through.  Being on the edge of the woods, the really young children need to have supervision.  Though designed for younger children, teens enjoy the tire swing.

Fire Pit

No center would be complete without a fire pit for evening roasting of marshmallows and talking.  A supply of wood is kept close at hand.
